CREATING A COASTAL HOME FROM HOME IN THURLESTONE

Creating and styling a coastal home from home in Thurlestone

With the most magnificent views of Thurlestone Rock and far-reaching views across Bigbury Number 4, is a very special apartment.

Our clients purchased it during the first lockdown in August 2020. Based in Singapore, they were unable to travel to the UK and hadn't seen the apartment in person until they completed the transaction.

Number 4 was a fabulous project to work on, and our brief was to transform it from a bland holiday apartment into a unique home from home that was personal to our clients. They entrusted us with creating a Devon home for them that was to be their permanent base when they were in the UK and definitely not a home for holiday letting.

They wanted their new Devon home to feel personal and already a part of them, and having spent many summers on holiday in Salcombe and the South Hams when their children were younger, they wanted their home to reflect those memories. From learning to surf at Bantham, crabbing on Victoria Quay through to favourite colours, linens and fabrics.

The family were keen to find meaningful artwork and create a coastal vibe and were fully involved in choosing the finishes and furnishings for the apartment. Our client portal was invaluable to the process as our clients were so far away.

We managed building works, applied for planning permission, reconfigured the bedrooms, dining space, created a new shower room to make the space more usable and showcase the fabulous view of Thurlestone Rock. We even created a welcoming entrance hall when there wasn't actually one there!

The main bedroom was reconfigured to create a clever space behind the bed; we added bespoke fitted wardrobes that our clients were able to go and view in Singapore  (thank goodness for Ikea!) and designed and built a gorgeous new shower room from an old cupboard. In addition, we made more of the space usable, from bespoke oak shelves instead of bedside tables to planning the bedrooms to make the space flexible for other family members to visit and stay.

We carried out a complete procurement service for our clients, from teaspoons and bedlinen to sourcing some beautiful pieces of artwork from local Devon and coastal artists like Lucy Gunning, Lucy Storrs, Michelle Parsons, Flo Snook, Amy Freeman, Melanie Mcdonald and Arthur Glendinning and from local galleries Gallery No.5 In Salcombe and Red Propeller Gallery in Kingsbridge (head to our Instagram to see some of these works featured!) The artwork complemented our clients chosen colour palette of blues and greys.

We also decorated the apartment ready for our clients at Christmas so they could enjoy their first holiday together there as a family.

Testimonial

“We approached the Refurb team at Pebbles to help us with renovating our holiday home / UK base in October 2020.  As we are based overseas at the moment and were unable to travel due to the pandemic all our interactions were virtual but despite this challenge we were impressed with Kat from the very first conversation - she was friendly, thorough and professional and put us immediately at ease that our project would be in safe hands.  The team did all we wanted and more in creating a stylish and practical home whilst maximising the space, layout and views.  Kat was happy to make recommendations and suggestions about layouts and the design but also listened to our feedback and really understood what we wanted.  We said “yes” to most things proposed but when we were struggling with some of the final art choices she showed immense patience as she continued to source and send us numerous options until we found the ideal pieces that resonated with us.   Living in Singapore during the pandemic meant we weren’t able to pop over to check on progress but received regular updates and photos which helped us see the project evolve.  The process was inevitably delayed due to some challenges related to the pandemic and Brexit but we felt that we were kept updated and informed at all times. Working directly with a local company meant that everything was seamless and connected.  Kat knew the best architects, structural engineers and builders to work with for our project and also worked directly with our neighbours to keep them updated regarding the timing of the more disruptive works as she was on the ground.  Overall Kat and her team were an absolute pleasure to work with throughout the project and I couldn’t recommend them more.”.
