Refurbishing a holiday apartment for two young families

2 Rockside in Salcombe, was a two-bedroom apartment that had been inherited by two sisters from their grandparents. When they came to the team at REFURB, they were seeking to update it for the use of their two young families when they visit the area on holiday.

The brief

Both sisters had young children and wanted to adapt the apartments to better suit family life and modern living, including adding third bedroom so they could have both of their families staying at the same time. In general, the configuration of the property was quite dated. So, central to the brief was keeping in mind that this was a place for a modern family with different age groups to consider.

For example, the dining area was located a long way from the kitchen, meaning the parents couldn’t keep an eye on the children if they were cooking. We sought to make the space practical and purposeful to meet their needs.

Key features included:

  • Modernising the look and layout of the apartment
  • Working with the conservation officer as it’s a Grade II listed building
  • Commissioning/choosing new furniture
  • Painting and decorating throughout
  • Bespoke kitchen commissioned
  • Liaising with the planning office

What the refurbishment team did

As the flat was in a Grade II listed building, it meant working closely with an architect and conservation officer throughout the project.

We reallocated the use of the rooms to make the property flow better. Initially it had a grand master bedroom that looked out over the sea, a second bedroom at the front of the apartment with sea views, the kitchen was at back along with a large bathroom and a living room.

We reorganised it so that the living spaces were at the front, enjoying the views. The master bedroom became the living room, connected to kitchen; we kept one bedroom as it was, and the kitchen at back became the second bedroom.

The existing bathroom was so large that we turned part of it into a third bedroom.  We also turned the utility room into an en-suite shower room, so that both sisters could stay at the property at the same time.

We redecorated the property throughout, including commissioning a bespoke kitchen to fit the unusual space. It featured a stylish bar area, and it was spray finished in the sisters’ colour of choice. We also commissioned several built-in furniture items in the sitting room to make the most of the space.

The result

By the end of the refurbishment, Rockside had been brought up to date in both style and configuration. Still within the parameters of the listed property, it had gone from a two-bedroom, one bathroom flat to being a three-bedroom, two-bathroom property that could happily accommodate both sisters and their families on their South Devon holidays.
