Redesigning a beach house in Bigbury
Burghbrook house is in a stunning position, just across the road from Bigbury beach and with views of Burgh Island. It's hard to think of a better location in the South Hams to have a home by the sea.
Our clients wanted a home conducive to family living and practical living by the beach. So we were commissioned to refurbish and renovate Burghbrook into a stylish coastal beach house.
One of the big problems with Burghbrook House was that the layout and the focus of the rooms inside were all wrong. For example, in the sitting room, the furniture was facing the fireplace, which was the opposite direction to the fantastic view of Burgh Island!
We instantly saw what was wrong with the layout and suggested opening up the kitchen into the rest of the house by removing the wall dividing the kitchen from the living room, which our clients loved.
We set about redesigning the sitting room so that it worked for all of the family and so that they could make the most of the view of Burgh Island from all areas.
And as works progressed, the specification grew, and the new kitchen island turned into a brand new kitchen refurb. We fitted a beautiful Masterclass kitchen from Ivybridge Kitchens with units in Scots Grey with a gorgeous contrasting coastal blue kitchen island, stunning lighting, sink, and white quartz tops.
From a dark sitting room that looked at the fireplace, we created different zones within the space to make it function for all the family throughout the day and into the evening by listening to how they use the house as a family.
From a beautiful window seat as a quiet place to sit and watch the seascape to a coffee area with a comfy chair to chat or read the paper with full views of the beach.
The sofa and TV were put into the old dining room where there is the least view of the sea to allow focused football watching, while the dining table was relocated into the old lounge to allow socialising to take place within the sound and sight of the beach.
